Perfect afternoon...

Beautiful setting, sunshine, tea, cake and drawing.

Thank you Angie for letting us come and making us feel so welcome.  It was lovely to see you, your allotment and delightful neighbour.

Shepherd Rd Allotments have an open day Saturday, 11 August.  Do visit if you can.  Fresh produce for sale, plant stall, refreshments and a chance to explore this oasis of calm a few minutes from St Annes Booths.

In preparation for an afternoon on an allotment we looked at paintings of gardens and landscapes and explored green and how to make different greens.  

Three fabric items were placed on the floor between us, each a different green, which we drew using coloured pencils.  

The results follow.  Very well done everyone!

glass, pens & coloured paper

Using a neutral coloured paper, white gel pens and black pens we looked at the lights and darks in glass.  Once the drawings were established, artists quality coloured pencils were used to soften areas which enabled tonal values to be added.  Tricky subject but interesting to try.

Dorothy worked with the shadows and reflections made by a glass placed on her drawing paper and used them as a starting point which turned into a cyclist.

sailing & sketching: Scotland 2018

To encourage sketching as a memento of a holiday...

The following were made using ball point pen in a 6 x 6 inch, stitched notebook with lined pages.  (Perfect bound or glued books are OK but you risk the pages becoming loose.)

I've tried not to edit these - though it is tempting - so, with some there are apparently random notes.

Also, sailing in good weather gives a total different sketching experience.  You have time to draw an object, for example Lismore Lighthouse, from different perspectives as you pass it which combine in a single drawing.  

Finally, apologies for spelling Loch Linnhe incorrectly.  

The blue pen didn't last long!
