soft pastel, A3 paper & four aspects of one room

The task:

  1. choose three soft pastels; light, mid-tone & dark
  2. using the mid-tone and light marks, make an observational drawing of the subject, an interior, on the paper
  3. add dark and light tones
  4. rub across the work with kitchen towel - this lifts off some pastel but leaves a spread of the colour over the paper and a stain where heavier lines had been drawn.  This process gives a softness & movement to the drawing.
  5. redraw over the top using the under-drawing as a guide but checking proportions etc from observation
  6. Repeat steps 2 - 5 until satisfied with the work or the time runs out.
  7. consider composition using "magic corners"

Not an easy task.  Very well done everyone!

snow-scapes: negative space

It's lovely to back at St Annes Library!

We started by looking at work by Bruegel, Hiroshige and Sisley and found the pallets for their work were restricted to very dark and very light contrasting colours which were almost monochrome, warmed by a subtle brown/orange.

Bruegal "Hunters in the Snow"

Hiroshige "Travellers in the Snow"

Sisley "The Watering Place at Marly-le-Roi

Using a book on cottages as a starting point, thumb nail sketches were made of possible compositions placing the chosen building into an imagined landscape.  One of these was selected to make a larger snow scene using dark, negative shapes/space to depict the shape of snowy roofs, paths etc.

The lovely work is below - well done everyone!
