pencil, ink & colour from a library's garden

The work made this week feels a little like an end of year show.  Each piece sings out the personality and style of the person who made it and for me, each sums up how much has been learnt over the last few months.

We used A3 cartridge paper with pencil, ink and spot colour to depict elements of St Annes Library's garden.

The amazing results are below.  Well done everyone!

One of us decided to focus on the building next door where I did my B Unit in Art:  the start of an incredible chapter in my life.  The inserted blue plaque shows the year I attended, '95 - '96.

The gentle mark making of this piece reminds me of an illustration in a children's book.  The narrative is open and invites the viewer to fill in the story.  Lovely!

Last week someone mentioned three dimensions:  not to miss an opportunity, that became this week's plan.

"Working with good cartridge paper and using a variety of techniques make a representation of an interest (that isn't art)."  

Techniques used were;

folding, curving, rolling, cutting, tearing, scrunching, moulding, attaching/sticking, using spot colour,  etc...

The brilliant results are below.

Personal, hand-sized time pieces were the starting point.  These were arranged with composition in mind then drawn with pencil.  The work was then redrawn in pen and and the pencil marks were erased. 

A background was added to bring the items together and spot colour was introduced to emphasise narrative and / or composition. 

The wonderful creations are below.

passing your drawing to the left: pencil & coloured pencil on paper

The subject, a brightly coloured collapsible stool was very similar all the way round.  

The task was to begin a drawing and after a length of time, pass it to your left as you received the drawing from the person on your right.  Continue the second drawing until it was time to pass on again.

We finished by each receiving the drawing we started back again and had extra time to finish it.

This activity helps us learn by; 

• accommodating changes
• accepting what's there and improving rather than starting again
• teaching us not to be precious with our work

All important considerations when working on our own.
