watercolours & an incoherent still life to make a narrative

We thought about how our imagination can make stories out of a set of random objects.  Then we looked at some images of paintings and explored the narrative or story in the work and considered composition as a tool for expanding or re-enforcing the story.

The task was to make a watercolour painting using a globe and an Easter Bunny as a starting point.  The room behind the objects could be used or ignored.  Elements from our imagination, colour, objects, setting etc were added to give the work a narrative.  We tested our ideas in sketches first before transferring our selected idea to watercolour paper.

The lovely, interesting results are below.  Well done everyone!

glass in black & white

On a neutral ground and starting with pencil, we drew the main shapes of the subject.

Black and white pens were used to highlight the lightest and darkest areas then pencil was used again to show shadow and the grey areas.

The dandy lion flower and dogwood twig were added to add colour and to rest the eyes from working in monochrome.

The excellent results follow - well done everyone!

chiaroscuro, a torch & a jam jar

This was Tricky with a capital "t".
Glass is notoriously difficult to capture and so too are shadows and reflections:  guess who put the three together...

A lot of learning took place this session.
Well done ladies, you rose to the challenge.
